Terpene Guide
The aromatic compounds that define flavour, effect, and plant character.
Terpenes are naturally occurring organic compounds produced by plants, fungi, and insects. They are the primary components of essential oils and responsible for the distinctive aromas of lavender, pine, citrus, and cannabis.
In cannabis, over 200 terpenes have been identified. They work alongside cannabinoids in what researchers call the entourage effect — the idea that cannabis compounds work together, not in isolation. A strain's terpene profile shapes not just its aroma but its effect.
THC and CBD don't work alone. The full chemical landscape — cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids — interacts with the endocannabinoid system in ways isolated compounds don't replicate. This is why two strains with identical THC percentages can feel completely different. Terpenes matter — arguably as much as potency.
The most abundant terpene in most cannabis strains. Associated with sedating effects. Also in hops, mango, lemongrass.
Associated with elevated mood and stress relief. Common in sativa-leaning cultivars. The same compound in lemon rind.
